Enjoy an action packed day of canyoning in Tasmania's wilderness world heritage area of Cradle Mountain. With no experience required, this full day tour is for all travelers looking for an adventurous and challenging day out. Experience abseiling into the canyon, freestyle falls and jumps of seven yards into the deep pool below. Continue through the canyon, encountering five more waterfalls before visiting the Laundry Shoot a ten meter high natural waterslide that spits canyoners out from a cave into a big open pool.

Your tour begins at the Cradle Mountain Canyons office early morning where you will be kitted out with wetsuits and other gear before traveling a short distance by bus to your first stop.

Begin your day with a 45-minute walk into the canyon passing through spectacular button grass plains, ancient rain forests while taking in incredible views of Cradle Mountain.

After a thorough safety talk from an experienced and qualified guide, abseil into the canyon where you can spend approximately three hours in the canyon, jumping and sliding off waterfalls, walking and floating through the calm stretches in between. In all, there are six waterfalls to get down. The highest jump is about seven meters. As there is no way for you to walk around each waterfall, you will need to abseil or jump down each waterfall.

At the end of the tour there is an approximately one hour walk out of the canyon. The first twenty minutes of this is up a steep hill in a wetsuit to get back to where dry clothes have been left (definitely the hardest part of the day physically). Groups then drive back to the office where the tour began and have the option to purchase photos of the tour.

End your day after a short bus trip back to Cradle Mountain Visitor Centre

Float and walk through a beautiful section of river and see the world from the point of view of a platypus. The Lost World Canyon offers a truly unique way to experience Tasmania’s Wilderness World Heritage Area. This tour is all about getting up close and personal with nature. Available to participants aged eight and up, it is not aimed at the adrenaline junkie, but some jump rocks up to three metres high and other challenges spice things up. Some of the highlights include seeing 1000-year old pencil pine trees and hearing the story of James ‘Philosopher’ Smith – the legendary first canyoner at Cradle Mountain.

Meet your group and guide at either 8.30am or 1.30pm. After getting kitted out, pile into the Canyon Mobile and drive approximately 15-minutes to Snake Hill. From here it is an easy 20-minute walk along boardwalk to the river, with stunning views of Cradle Mountain gained along the way.

After a thorough safety talk, enter the river and begin floating and walking your way down-stream. Spend approximately one hour in the water. For the adventurous there are jumps from rocks up to three metres into the water and other challenges to spice things up. In low water conditions, this might include taking a deep breath and swimming under a bolder. In higher water levels it will involve swimming down rapids and shoots. If you don't want to do the jumps, that's fine too.

The guides on the tour will tell you lots of interesting facts about the area you are in and tell you some stories about some of the interesting characters who have passed this way before.

Having left the river, get changed back into your dry clothes and walk out the same way we came in. This is probably the hardest part of the tour as it is up hill and your wetsuit is heavier on the way out, because it is wet!

The after dark feeding tour is an experience that is unique to Devils@Cradle. This tour provides an unforgettable experience, and the opportunity to observe these extraordinary animals whilst one of our keepers gives you a greater understanding of them, and details the conservation work being undertaken within the facility. Devils are primarily a nocturnal species, therefore far more active at night, and the introduction of food generally stimulates some fierce competition between them. We use environmentally sensitive lighting and focus on the social interactions and feeding habits of these unique carnivores, allowing visitors a rare up close opportunity of seeing Tasmanian devils in a group feeding situation - quite a spectacular sight. So don't miss an amazing night with the Tasmanian devil!

Guests are able to arrive prior to the tour start time and self-guide within the sanctuary until the commencement of the tour. The after dark feeding tour begins in our interpretation centre at 5.30 PM, with a brief introduction to the three species managed within the sanctuary followed by a short film. The second, and larger, part of the tour involves a guided walk outside, within the sanctuary itself, amongst a large breeding group of Tasmanian devils and quolls. The tour guide will enter the enclosures and feed a number of these animals whilst interpreting their behaviour and discussing biology, threats and conservation; answering any questions visitors may have.
