No trip to Sydney is complete without witnessing a live performance in its most famous building, so prepare for the most impressive night you've ever had with an amazing performance by Opera Australia. This season includes legendary operas by Mozart and Puccini, as well as an iconic Broadway musical by Andrew Lloyd Webber. Before the performance or at interval, enjoy drinks at the Sydney Opera House Northern Foyer bar, where you can admire stunning views of Sydney Harbour (drinks at own expense).

The 2018 opera season promises to exceed all expectations as new stars join favorites from previous seasons to transport audiences to another world. Whether you’re an opera aficionado or just looking to add something special to your Sydney vacation, a performance at the Sydney Opera House — a UNESCO World Heritage site — isn't any old night at the opera!

Performances take place in the Opera Theatre. With seating for 1,547 people, the theater is the Sydney Opera House’s second-largest venue. All operas are performed in their original languages (mostly Italian); English subtitles are projected onto a screen above the stage.

Bars inside the Sydney Opera House open one hour prior to performance time — arrive early to enjoy a pre-theater drink (own expense) and admire the unbeatable views of Sydney Harbour and the Harbour Bridge.

See the Itinerary section below for details about the operas scheduled for the 2018/2019 season.

A setting like the magnificent Sydney Harbour demands a spectacular opera, so prepare for a performance of huge proportions for West Side Story directed by Francesca Zambello. In 2019, West Side Story takes the iconic stage at Handa Opera on Sydney Harbour. Raise a glass as the sun sets and drink in the view as you share a meal in one of the pop-up bars and restaurants on site. Then sit back to enjoy the enthralling show, complete with live orchestra hidden beneath the dramatic stage and fireworks in the balmy night air. This is a must see production, playing for four weeks only in March and April 2019.

Head to the Handa Opera's waterside venue at Mrs Macquarie's Point, within the beautiful Royal Botanic Gardens.

What grander setting could there be for such a performance than Sydney Harbour itself, awash with the light of the city and the Sydney Opera House silhouetted against the setting sun? Opera on the Harbour will open on March 22, 2019 for an exclusive four-week season, playing at night on a purpose-built floating stage on Sydney Harbour. With the Sydney Opera House and the Harbour Bridge as a backdrop. Encounter the wildness of youth and ecstasy of love as this modern day  Romeo and Juliet unfolds under a starlit sky.

On the mean streets of New York's West Side, two rival gangs strut their stuff. But when a Jet falls for a Shark, the stage is set for a rumble. Their wistful love story is studded with infectious songs including 'Somewhere', 'Maria', 'I Feel Pretty', 'America', 'Cool' and of course, 'Tonight'. As the star-crossed lovers, Maria and Tony, homegrown stars Alexander Lewis and Julie Lea Goodwin reprise the sizzling chemistry of their performances together in The Merry Widow and The Phantom of the Opera. An all-singing, all-dancing supporting cast takes on Bernstein’s brilliant score and Jerome Robbins’ original electrifying choreography. Renowned director Francesca Zambello teams up with Brian Thomson and Jennifer Irwin to create a brand new production for the harbour-top stage.

Available for four weeks only from March 22 to April 21, 2019, Opera on the Harbour has become a huge part of the cultural landscape, combining all of the things Sydney does best: world-class opera, sparking wine and fine dining, and sunsets and spectacle on the Harbour's edge.
