Depart from the Granite Island Causeway for an exhilarating 45-minute boat ride. Visit Seal Island to view Seals and Sea Lions as well as nesting seabirds. Then head towards Wright Island to hear the Whaling History of Encounter Bay and to search for Bottle Nosed Dolphins. Returning along Granite Island spectacular coastline to the causeway landing to complete the cruise.

Board your vessel - the 'Big Duck'; a 37-foot (11.3-metre) Naiad Rigid Inflatable Boat, purpose built for Southern Ocean conditions. The vessel has full sun protection, comfortable seating for up to 24 passengers and has a toilet on board. There's lots of space to move about the boat to view dolphins, seals and whales and the boat can run quietly on one engine.

Departing from the Granite Island Causeway, a 5-minute scenic cruise takes you along the northern side of Granite Island past the Penguin Centre and Horse Tram route and around the breakwater into the open ocean. A further 5-minutes of exhilarating motoring and you are at Seal Rock, where New Zealand Fur seals and Australian Sea Lions can be seen basking in the sun and often swim to the stationary boat to have a good look at the passengers!

Seabirds including petrels, shearwaters and cormorants can also be seen on or around Seal Rock. Common and bottlenose dolphins are also often in the vicinity and sometimes race the boat. After about 10-minutes viewing the wildlife and beautiful scenery at Seal Rock, head towards Wright Island. Here you will learn about the areas Whaling past and to search for Bottle Nosed Dolphins, after which the Big Duck returns to the Granite Island Causeway landing.

There's lots of space to move about the boat to view dolphins, seals and whales and the boat can run quietly on one engine.

Depart from the Granite Island Causeway and cruise slowly between the mainland and the northern side of Granite Island, affording breathtaking views of both the Victor Harbor shoreline and the island. Once past the breakwater the Big Duck picks up its pace. Seal Rock is the first stop, where New Zealand Fur Seals and Australian Sea Lions bask in the sun between fishing forays and swimming out to the boat for a sticky-beak! Then on past the huge granite boulders of Wright Island and the Bluff, with Shark Alley in between where your Captain talks about the whaling history of the area.

Many visitors to Victor Harbor never venture past Petrel Cove on the western side of The Bluff, but this is where you are in for a real treat! West Island is a Conservation Park, complete with a research hut used by the universities and park rangers. From the back of the island another colony of seals and sea lions can often be seen basking on the rocks and swimming in the shallows. Seabirds abound in this remote area and often pods of common and bottlenose dolphins can be spotted playing or feeding. Head further west past the darkly spectacular cliffs of Kings Beach and Waitpinga before turning around and heading back to Granite Island.

Should whales be present (June to October) the cruise will revert to a Whale Watching tour and travel to wherever the most recent sighting of whales have occurred. This quite often means heading towards Horseshoe Bay and Bashams Beach a common area to find Southern Right Whales which visit the Encounter Bay area every winter. The females visit these warmer shallow waters from Antarctica to give berth to their calves and to mate.
